Autodesk Revit is a CAD and BIM program for Windows operating systems, created by Revit Technologies Inc.

Autodesk has developed three versions of Revit for different building design disciplines:

  • Revit Architecture, for architects and building designers (formerly Revit Building)
  • Revit Structure, for structural engineers
  • Revit MEP, for mechanical, electrical and thermotechnical engineers (formerly Revit Systems)

Today the three versions are merged into a single program, which contains the three modules and an analysis module.

One of the strengths of Revit is to be able to easily generate perspective or axonometric views, which would require considerable effort in manual design; an example is the creation of shaded perspective sections. Another feature of extreme importance is that of constructing the model using constructive elements, while in other similar software the creation of the forms is released from the constructive and structural function. Carrying element of Revit is the exploitation of the "fourth dimension", that is time. It is in fact possible to set the time phases: for example, Fact Status and Project Status. Each element of the model can be created in one phase and demolished in another, then having the possibility of creating comparison views with the appropriate highlights: "Yellow and Red". The weaknesses of the program are represented, instead, by the sometimes not very intuitive interface, by the quality of the renderings, which, although using the "radiosity" engine, is not comparable to that obtainable with dedicated rendering software, finally the program limits the design to "building" structures while it is not prepared for civil engineering (roads and infrastructures in general). For this reason Autodesk markets specific BIM software such as Civil 3D.
