Those who need to install Office on a computer are often faced with two options: purchasing a specific version only once or choosing a Microsoft 365 plan. Word, Excel and PowerPoint are common names for the two offers, but functions, services and conditions are not identical.
To decide, it is best to separate four aspects: version of the applications, duration of the right of use, authorized devices and services actually needed.
A one-time purchase allows you to use a specific edition of Office under the license terms. During the supported period it receives expected updates and fixes; upgrading to a later major version requires a new purchase.
Microsoft 365 is a family of subscription plans. The applications included, the cloud space and the number of users depend on the plan: it is not enough to read "Microsoft 365" to know the entire package.
The main applications may be present in both purchase options, but this does not mean that they have all the same functionality. Office 2024 has a feature set tied to the edition purchased; Microsoft 365 plans with desktop applications receive new features under the terms of service.
Microsoft also distinguishes Office 2024 from Office LTSC editions. Before purchasing, the precise edition must therefore be identified, not just the year reported in the name. The manufacturer explains the differences in the FAQs about Office 2024 and Office LTSC 2024.
The OneDrive space included depends on your plan and subscription terms. It is not correct to attribute the same quota to each subscription: before choosing, check both the quantity available and the possible sharing between multiple people.
Your one-time purchase of Office does not automatically include additional cloud space. However, it does not oblige you to keep all files only on your computer: you can use separate storage services, within the limits of the respective plans.
Many Office editions sold as a one-time purchase are licensed for one computer. For Microsoft 365 personal plans with desktop applications indicated by the manufacturer, such as Personal and Family, specific installation and access rules apply: the five simultaneous sign-ins should not be confused with the number of people who can share a plan.
A personal plan for one user and a shareable plan are not equivalent. The benefits linked to artificial intelligence can also remain reserved for the subscription owner: check the actual plan. The references are the Microsoft comparison between one-time purchase and subscription and the Sharing FAQ.
A perpetual license does not automatically mean that each edition always works offline. Office 2024 retail requires periodic Internet access to maintain activation. LTSC editions and Volume activations follow different rules.
Microsoft describes, for example, initial activation via MAK and renewal to the activation server via KMS. If you work on a computer isolated from the network, check before purchasing which edition and which activation method are provided. Rules for a specific offer do not automatically apply to all one-time purchases.
Support for Office 2021 ended on October 13, 2026. Since that date, Microsoft has no longer provided security updates, fixes and support for that version, as indicated on the end of support for Office 2021 page.
End of support does not automatically terminate the usage rights granted by a perpetual license. However, it is not a guarantee that the program will work on any future device: compatibility and activation requirements remain.
For a new purchase it makes sense to evaluate a version that is still supported, such as Office 2024, checking the operating system, necessary applications and conditions of the chosen edition. However, a need for compatibility with a previous version requires a specific evaluation.
It depends on the product and supply channel, not just the duration. Many retail licenses allow the transfer by respecting the terms and removing the previous installation; OEMs are normally associated with the original device.
Before purchasing, check which conditions apply to your new computer and what procedures are necessary. To distinguish duration, channel and digital delivery you can read the guide to software licenses.
The price comparison is covered in the article on how much the Office package costs. To understand which programs are included in the different suites, find the guide to the Office package.
In the Macrosoft Office catalog, check the precise edition and conditions of the individual offer. If you also compare products from the Microsoft 365 category, check the plan, period covered and services included before purchasing. For clarifications you can contact support from Monday to Saturday, from 9am to 8pm.
The right to use the purchased version does not have a predefined contractual expiry date. Support, system requirements and activation remain separate aspects to verify.
No: Upgrading to a later major version requires a new purchase. Expected updates and fixes arrive during the support period of the version you purchased. Microsoft clarifies this on the page upgrade Office.
No. Plans include different applications and services. Before comparing a plan with an edition of Office bought with a one-time payment, check the plan name and the list of included applications.
Turning off automatic renewal and reaching the expiration are different steps. Check how long the period is covered and which features remain available after the plan expires.
Expiring does not automatically delete local files. However, application functions and available cloud space may be reduced: check the conditions of your plan and keep copies of important documents.
Your choice starts with the way you work, but also requires checking the precise offer. Version, plan, and license terms help you compare purchases that would otherwise seem equivalent.
