Microsoft Access is a software interface for managing relational database systems (RDBMS) that utilizes the Microsoft Jet Database Engine and inherently integrates a module for the rapid development of management applications (RAD, Rapid Application Development). For the development of simple applications, one can avoid programming directly, making use of some templates already included in the package. For more advanced development needs, the product provides the Microsoft Visual Basic programming language (for Office applications defined as VBA - Visual Basic for Applications). Although the product supports object-oriented (OO) programming techniques, it does not constitute an entirely object-oriented development environment.
